Strategies
Measures need to be taken in order to safeguard and preserve the rare assets of biodiversity. Taking into account the biology of the orchid species that have been recorded, the time period of enhanced protection needs to be defined.
The issues that need to be addressed are :
-
pedestrian traffic
Visitors of the park, engaging in athletic activities or strolling through the green spaces of the park, are unaware of the small wonders of flowering plants covered by the grass.
-
maintenance activities
Maintenance crews of infrastructure regularly at work at the surrounding green spaces of the buildings.
-
green spaces works
As the main task of the gardeners is the maintenance of trees, they are equally unaware of the rarity and significance of orchid species.
-
arbitrary actions by some visitors
The tall and showy orchid species have attracted the attention of one or two visitors of the park who cut the spikes.
An array of strategies have been considered. Implementation will reveal though, which measures will be more efficient and practical.
-
Installing barriers in target areas.
The access to pockets with a great number of plants, has been restricted by installing mild barriers.
Communicating the protection status by Greek and European Union legislature.
- CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)

- European Environment Agency, EUNIS Database

(Threat and conservation status, Legal status)
E.g. for Himantoglossum robertianum (Loisel.) P. Delforg

Note: The agencies have been informed in order to intervene and stop arbitrary activity. Along with barriers in target areas, they seem to have produced results so far.
-
Promoting environmental education to the university community and visitors.
The Rector of the NTUA, professor Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou has initiated the botanical labeling of diverse trees and shrubs. With the aim to advocate and protect the unique species diversity of the park. The establishment of botanical pathways will provide an appropriate framework for the promotion of native flora and orchids.
As is the case with many campuses, the NTUA park is integrated in research and education processes. Therefore, there are conditions for harmonizing university activity with environmental education.
